cattleya amethystoglossa

The flowers of this species literally have the power to hypnotize-so unusual and interesting is their color. It is a shame that C.amethystoglossa is so unwilling to bloom in cultivation, and that it is quite unwidely. The pseudobulbs reach a height of up to 32 in/ 80 cm and bear 2-3 leaves on the top . As with the all the other Cattleya orchids, a flat flower sheath forms between the leaves on the maturing shoots, bursts after some time and puts out the flower spike. The infloresscence is rich -it numbers 5-10 flowers . The flowers are tough,up to 3.2 in/8 cm in diameter; the lip is rather small and and mauve, with lateral lobes that have a tinge of white. The tepals are white to pinkish, with burgundy spots. Cultivation is the same as with the species. C. bicolor. The plants bloom between February and April. They were first discovered in Bahia,Brazil.
