Alamania punicea

Alamania punicea

Alamania punicea is rather rare in cultivation, but should do well under cool-house conditions, as those described for Sophronitis species . The species Alamania Punicea resembles the genus Sophronitis a little in appearance; its pseudobulbs are very reduced , with their lower halves pressed aganist the support and ended with 1-2 reddish , dark , green and slightly thickened leaves. The orange blooms grow in clusters with several heads on each ,they can be 0.8 in /2 cm across at most ,and they literally shine into space. A lthough you could hardly find an orchid lover who would not like to grow this orchid ,it is very rare in cultivation . The problem is that in orderto prosper ,it needs a very specific environment of the tropical mountain forest- a constant breeze that is not very warm,an almost permenent fog, rain and a lot of light. These conditions can rarely be provided in artificial cultures.A. punicea blooms in march to april and comes from Mexico. Rare in cultivation. Bright red-orange flowers on small plants make an attractive show. The flower spikes contain up to 9 flowers which are 3/4 - 1 in. across. Requires cool conditions to grow and bloom well.
